The Eunice High Lady Bobcats suffered a tough District 4-3A loss to the Crowley High Ladies Friday night at the Bobcat gym.
After a slow start, Coach Brett Simien’s Lady Bobcats clawed their way back to tie the game in the final seconds to force overtime. But Crowley would dominate in the extra period, outscoring the Lady Cats 9-1 for the victory.
The loss was a costly one for the Eunice girls as they dropped to 4-5 in district play. Overall, the Lady Cats are 7-10.
Crowley (7-17, 3-6) jumped to an 8-0 lead in the opening quarter as the Lady Cats struggled on the offensive end. Mercedes Rogers led Crowley in the quarter with four points.
Eunice got its first points of the game at the 6:22 mark of the second quarter on Tia Janice’s field goal. Crowley led 11-4 with 4:31 left in the half when the Lady Cats made a 7-2 run to end the quarter.
A jumper by Heather Thomas started the run. After a goal by Crowley, Thomas hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 13-7. Thomas then fed Abbey Hillman inside for a bucket, before Adrianne Guillory hit a jumper with 16 seconds left to cut the Crowley lead to 13-11 at the half.
Crowley held the edge in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Cats 11-5 for a 24-16 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Cats opened the fourth quarter by cutting the lead to 24-22 as Camille Faul nailed a three-point goal, Thomas hit a free throw, and Janice hit two free throws in the opening two minutes.
Things looked bleak for Eunice later in the quarter as Crowley built a 30-24 with 2:07 remaining. But the Lady Cats went on a 7-1 run, with Guillory hit a short jumper after a pass from Tass Prudhomme with 2.2 seconds left to tie the game.
Rogers proved to be the difference for Crowley in the overtime. Rogers scored five of her team’s nine points in the extra period.
Eunice played the game without one of their usual starters, who showed up late to the game and did not play.
Coach Simien praised the effort of the girls that did play. “They gave great effort, but we just came up short.”
Rogers had 16 points to lead Crowley, with Kara Wilridge chipping in with nine.
Thomas led a balanced Eunice attack with nine. Guillory had eight, Janice had six, and Faul added five.
The Lady Cats will wrap up the regular season Tuesday at Church Point.
