Grand Jury to decide Rayne shooting

RAYNE – A February shooting in Rayne involving a 35-year-old male and several officers will be handed to a grand jury to decide whether charges should be filed. The case was originally turned over to the DA’s office in early June after state police completed their investigation. The shooting rendered Anthony Campbell wounded in the head, the bullet remains lodged in Campbell’s skull.
On February 10, authorities arrived at Campbell’s home on the corner of West C Street and Malvern Avenue to execute a search warrant. Allegedly an unidentified Acadia Parish Sheriff’s deputy was struck by Campbell’s vehicle as he attempted to flee from authorities. Both Rayne police and APSO deputies fired shots at Campbell’s vehicle.
According to district attorney Mike Harson, the shooter can not be determined because the bullet cannot be retrieved from Campbell’s head.
Harson expects that Campbell may face assault or battery charges in connection with the incident. In addition, Investigators allegedly found an undetermined amount of substances believed to be narcotics along with a large amount of narcotics inside Campbell’s vehicle.
Harson expects the case to be heard by an Acadia Parish grand jury October 8. He also stated that he will present the whole case to the grand jury and let it decide whether charges should be filed, “that way we get it done all at one time,” Harson explained.
