New laws to support teachers

BATON ROUGE – Governor Jindal announced Monday that two new laws will address classroom discipline problems, which he stated was a top complaint of teachers. According to recent surveys, Louisiana is the second worst in the nation in public discipline problems. “We need a zero tolerance policy for disruptions in the classroom,” he said.

Deadly weekend on roads in Acadia

CROWLEY – This weekend was a dangerous one in Acadia Parish for those out on the roads, with one person killed and another one injured in two separate accidents.
A 16-year-old boy was killed Sunday evening when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a truck on La. Highway 35.
The accident occurred just after 9 p.m.

Banks safe here in Crowley

CROWLEY – The strain on some of our nation’s banks recently, highlighted by the failure of IndyMac Bank last week, has had some people worried about whether their accounts are safe. However, while banks in other parts of the country have had their problems, Louisiana banks have remained stable. And in Crowley, the problem is virtually nonexistent.

Volunteerism encouraged at Coalition meeting

CROWLEY – The July meeting of the Acadia Adult and Senior Wellness Coalition was held recently. The group, which encourages senior citizen awareness and a better overall quality of life for seniors in our area, has been active for about one year, according to Amanda Dupre´, who works as a representative for SAABS and as a fundamental part of the group. Michele Veillon, of Southwind and Summerwood Communities, stands as well as an advocate for the group.
