Playground construction begins May 7 in Church Point
The Buggy Town Playground becomes a reality this week, with construction beginning Wednesday, May 7.
As of press time, the playground had received a total of $90,777.00 in donations, thanks to the generosity of many.
The largest individual donation was made by Church Point native Charles Richard. Mr. Richard has been following the story of the playground in the Church Point News and gave a $5,000.00 about a month ago. Last week, he made a second donation of $5,000.00, for a combined gift of $10,00.00. In all, there were eight donations of $5,000.00 or more. A plaque will be placed at the playground entrance recognizing those who made large donations to the project.
A Leathers and Associates co-ordinator from New York will arrive in Church Point on Tuesday, May 6, and construction will begin the next day.
With construction about the begin, the playground committee is now in need of volunteers. Volunteers are not required to have carpentry skills. If you have not signed up, just show up for work or call Nenna (298-0972) to schedule a shift time. Work will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every night.
Tools are also needed. The committee guarantees that tools will be returned in good condition or replaced. Come to the building site to see what tools are needed.
Gravel for the playground is also needed.
Engraved pickets and bricks will be sold at the site, with a purchasing deadline of May 15. The deadline for the playhouse raffle has been extended to Sunday, May 11, with the drawing taking place at the new playground. Buggy Town Playground t-shirts can also be purchased for $12.00.
The playground committee greatly appreciates the generosity of so many giving individuals and businesses, and envisions the smiling faces of children enjoying this project for years to come. The park will benefit every child in the Church Point community.
If you have not contributed, you still can and in many ways. Volunteer your time, bake some cookies or buy some and bring them to the site for the volunteers. Or, purchase an engraved picket, brick, t-shirt or raffle ticket. Lend your tools, or give financially.
Weather permitting, Sunday afternoon around 5 or 6 p.m., the playground will have a small Grand Opening and allow the children a chance to play for an hour or so. Please come and be a part of this wonderful event for the children and for the community.
