Lady Pios cruise to Bobcat Relays title
EUNICE – A strong performance on the track, led by sophomore Kali Zaunbrecher, helped propel Notre Dame’s Lady Pios to the overall team title Friday at Eunice High’s Bobcat Relays.
The Lady Pios scored 120 points to claim their second team title in three weeks. Meet host Eunice followed with 81 points while Beau Chene was third with 71.
Rayne finished the evening in sixth place with 47 points and Crowley was seventh in the 10-team field with 38.
Prejean named Class B MVP
For the past 10 years, the Fairview High Lady Panthers have been a state tournament regular, winning five championships in that span, including the past four in a row.
This year, the Fairview boys team also reached the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Top 28 Tournament, reaching the semifinals for the first time in 22 years.
As a result of that success, the Class B all-state team selected by a panel of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association has a Fairview flavor.
Rebels sweep top All-District honors
CROWLEY – The Midland Rebels were a force to be reckoned with all season long on the prep basketball scene.
The Rebels ran up a 31-3 regular season record and swept through District 7-B play with an unblemished 8-0 record in claiming their seventh league title in the last 10 years.
For their efforts, the Rebels were rewarded with the top two honors on the All-District team that was recently announced by league coaches.
Todd Briley was tabbed as the Coach of the Year while Miles Prejean earned Most Valuable Player honors.
Gents split pair at North Vermilion Tourney
LEROY – The Crowley Gents rebounded from a 10-0 loss to North Vermilion Thursday and slipped past Iota, 6-4, Friday at the North Vermilion Tournament.
Crowley (9-6) struggled both offensively and defensively Thursday in the loss to North Vermilion. The Gents logged just one hit off Patriot hurler Mark Frederick and committed six errors that led to six unearned runs.
Brain Broussard had the lone hit for the Gents, a single to center in the fourth inning.
In Friday’s contest, Crowley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and had a 3-1 advantage after two innings
Northside trio earns All-District honors
CROWLEY – Northside Christian struggled through a rugged non-district schedule in 2009-10, but the Warriors rebounded just in time to sweep through their league slate with a perfect 4-0 record.
$1 Million Hole-in-One sets last qualifying, finals Sunday
BROUSSARD – The last chances for Acadiana-area golfers to earn a shot at a $1 million prize are scheduled for this weekend when the Cypress Bayou Casino $1 Million Hole-in-One Shootout holds its final three days of qualifying at Le Triomphe Country Club.
