Crowley’s fire rating remains at Class 2

Crowley’s Fire Rating remains a Class 2.
Interim Fire Chief Terry Romero told members of the Crowley City Council recently that the current rating for Crowley will remain intact.
“Class 1 is the best possible rating and there are only a few of those in the state,” he said.
The Class 2 rating means insurance premiums for homes and businesses in the area served by the Crowley Fire Department will remain low.
Every fire department in the state of Louisiana is graded / tested on various aspects of their performance, record keeping, number of firefighters available, communications, water supply, etc. This test is done at minimum of every five years unless the department is selected at random.
The ratings calculate how well-equipped fire departments are to put out fires in that community. Insurance companies use those scores to calculate insurance premiums.
The fire rating is a score from 1 to 10 that indicates how well-protected the community is by the fire department. A lower number is better: 1 is the best possible rating while a 10 means the fire department did not meet the minimum requirements.
There are four main criteria to a fire rating score:
• 50 percent comes from the quality of the local fire department, including staffing levels, training and proximity of the firehouse;
• 40 percent comes from the availability of water supply, including the prevalence of fire hydrants and how much water is available for putting out fires;
• 10 percent comes from the quality of the area’s emergency communications systems (911); and
• An extra 5.5 percent comes from community outreach, including fire prevention and safety courses.
Any area that is more than 5 driving miles from the nearest fire station is automatically rated a 10.
