Joni Guidry, deputy registrar of voters, checks in Mike Henry of Rayne during early voting at the Acadia Parish Registrar of Voters office Wednesday morning. In just three days, nearly 2,500 voters from across Acadia Parish have visited the registrar’s office to cast early ballots.

Early voting record?

Registrar: ‘I don’t remember a turnout this heavy’

The numbers are up across the state and it’s no different here in Acadia Parish.
“We had a line of people all the way to the awning (on the courthouse) before we opened Saturday morning,” said Registrar of Voters Billie J. Meyer. “It was kind of nippy that morning so we brought them inside and had everyone line up down the hall until we ‘officially’ opened for voting at 8:30.”
Nearly 1,000 voters — 995 to be exact — visited the registrar’s office on opening day, according to Meyer’s records.
Another 748 came in Monday and 648 voted on Tuesday. By 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, 2,446 early votes had been cast “in person.” Another 137 mail in ballots had been received.
“I don’t remember a turnout this heavy,” Meyer said. “It’s been a steady stream since we opened up Saturday morning.”
A check of her records revealed that about 3,900 early votes were cast in the 2008 presidential election, with 3,482 of those designated as “in-person” votes.
“That’s the most I can remember and I think we’re going to beat that this year,” Meyer said.
Thus far, the highest turnout of voters has been from Ward 6 — Crowley — driven by the four millage renewals on the ballot there.
“But it’s been pretty scattered across the parish,” Meyer said.
A parishwide millage renewal for the Cooperative Extension Office and Rice Arena, along with the two statewide races — for governor and for secretary of state — are cited as the driving forces.
Early voting continues through Saturday. The registrar’s office is open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day.
