Area girls basketball teams begin district slate tonight

With the first half of the 2019-20 prep basketball season in the books, district action begins this evening for the girls as all four of the area teams take part in their respective league openers.
Highlighting tonight’s action will be a rivalry contest when the Midland Lady Rebels host the Bell City Lady Bruins at 6 p.m.
The Lady Rebels (11-14) swept the two-game series in 2018, winning a close one on the road (37-28) before claiming a blowout victory (70-31) at home.
The Lady Bruins are much improved this year and enter the contest with a mark of 10-9. However, they have just two victories in their last nine outings.
The Rebels will also take on Bell City in the district opener on the boys side.
The Rebels are 15-9 overall and are coming off a big victory over Class B power Fairview on Friday.
The Bruins are just 6-13 thus far but have been in just about every game against a tough schedule of opponents.
Another interesting matchup on the girls side takes place at A.B. Dore Gym where the Notre Dame Lady Pios will take on the Port Barre Lady Devils.
Both teams have had their fair share of struggles during the early part of the season with each winning just one game. The Lady Pios are 1-10 while the Lady Devils enter at 1-8.
In other girls action, Iota’s Lady Bulldogs will have their hands full in their District 5-3A opener at Northwest.
The Lady Raiders are currently 17-3 on the season and recently picked up a 52-50 victory over the three time defending Division IV state champions Lafayette Christian, who defeated the Lady Dogs 55-11 Friday.
The Crowley Ladies also open district play at home tonight against Erath.
Aside from Bell City at Midland and Port Barre at Notre Dame tonight in boys district openers, the Northside Christian Warriors begin league play at home against Hackberry.
The most intriguing non-district matchup on the boys side is the Crowley Gents traveling to Lafayette to take on legendary coach Danny Broussard and his St. Thomas More Cougars tonight.
The Gents are 11-5 thus far but haven’t played in over a week after Opelousas canceled on them last Friday.
The Cougars, however, are on a 10-game winning streak and are fresh off a pair of tournament titles at the Sunkist Shootout and the Southside tournament. The two-time reigning Division II state champions are 11-4 on the season.
Iota (6-12) will also be in action at Westlake tonight for a non-district contest.
