Prep Roundup: Notre Dame splits pair with St. Edmund

EUNICE – Notre Dame exploded for 23 points in the second quarter and cruised past St. Edmund Monday, 61-51, in the season opener for the Pios.
St. Edmund took a 13-10 lead after the first quarter before the Pios’ outburst that was sparked by a trio of 3-pointers from Matt Bernard.
The big run gave the Pios a 33-23 advantage at the break.
Zach Lamm took over in the third quarter and scored seven points as the Pios increased their cushion to 17 (49-32).
The Blue Jays chipped away in the final frame and outscored the Pios 19-12 over the final eight minutes.
Bernard was the high-man for the Pios with 15 points. Lamm added 12 points while Chris Schmid and Nick Swacker also hit double figures with 11 points each.
In addition to the leaders, Christian Hensgens scored five points, Teddy Menard had four and Parker Link finished with three.
The news was not as good for the Lady Pios in the opener.
The Lady Pios (0-5) struggled from the floor, hitting just seven shots, and went just 8-for-20 from the charity stripe in a 39-22 setback.
The Lady Jays led just 18-11 at the break but outscored the Lady Pios 21-11 in the second half.
Jeanne Claire Schimd led the Lady Pios with 10 points and Maggie Chiasson had six.
Gabby Cates and Darcy Lavergne each added two points. Anne Katherine Hundley and Emma Leonards rounded out the scoring with one point each.
Lake Arthur sweeps Iota
IOTA – Lake Arthur pulled off a sweep of Iota Monday by taking a close 53-50 victory in the girls game and a 66-50 win in the boys contest.
In the girls game, the Lady Tigers (8-1) broke a 25-25 deadlock in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Dogs 12-7.
The Lady Dogs (3-3) outscored the Lady Tigers 18-16 in the final frame.
Vivian Sketoe and Deonna Brister combined for 34 points in the victory.
Kendall Miller led the Lady Dogs with a game-high 21 points. She knocked down four 3-pointers and also had six rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Avery Young followed with 12 points and seven boards, Colleen Johnson had nine points and Andriana Curtis scored four. Madelyn Boone and Lilly Zaunbrecher each scored two points.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter but it was all Lake Arthur after that.
The Bulldogs (3-4) were outscored 22-9 in the second frame and 34-26 over the final two quarters.
Kyle Guidry paced the Bulldogs with 16 points. Andrew Thibodeaux and Kyle Thibodeaux followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Daniel Simon and Micah Renfro added four points each in the loss and Owen Daigle had three.
Other Action
In other action involving Acadia Parish teams, the Midland Rebels improved to 8-5 on the season with a 67-65 victory over Class 5A Barbe.
The Lady Rebels fell to 5-10 overall with a 73-41 loss to the Lady Bucs.
Unfortunately, no other information was available on those games as of press time.
